holy crap!! i hit the gas station mother-load!! coming off of 12 hours of driving in 60 total hours we turned off the interstate to fuel up. after holding my breath and dealing with an odor that can only be described as ‘a baby diaper full of curry’ in the bathroom i headed out into the main area to get a bottle of water and see what odd atrocities i could find. i scanned the chips and suddenly my eyes widened as i came across a bag of something i have never seen before: burger king potato chips. i was scared and intrigued all at the same time when i grabbed a bag of the ketchup & fries flavor. this would prove to be a great thing and a scary one all at the same time.
p.s. i searched like crazy for these on the interwebs and info is sparse. however after some digging i came across the manufacturers website and found some nutritionals for you to peruse. onto the review.
busting open the bag: holy shit it smells like ketchup on fries. i am not sure how they did it or what chemical combination from a facility on the new jersey turnpike they used but it sure as shit smells like ketchup on fries. i was floored and happy all at the same time. they are shaped like thin rectangles measuring about 1/2″ wide by about 1.5″ long. they are regularly shaped, like pringles, but using dehydrated potato mixed with some starch and rolled out into sheets and cut. they are oddly uniform.
but how do they taste: they taste like they smell. i thought my mind was playing tricks on me. it was odd, familiar, new and exciting all at once. at first blush the tomato makes itself known, but then you start to taste all the other elements that make ketchup, well, ketchup. you get that spice flavor, the semi-thick coating (mentally, not figuratively), and then you get that enhanced-french-fry-potato-flavor from the burger king fries you have come to know and love. as the crispy texture of the chips goes away and it becomes a mushy amalgam of red and yellow you almost think you are mashing together a mouthful of ketchup and fries. again, odd and familiar all at once.
overall: they get a 9/10. i have to say i actually really dug the flavor. although i don’t eat burger king as much as i used to this does fill a void. i can’t, however, eat more than 1/3 to 1/2 a bag of these at once. that’s where they lose a point, though. i heard whispers that these were in limited production, but i hope they gain national acceptance. if you can grab a bag and try them out. close your eyes and just think about what you are eating; you will be as surprised as i was.
check back tomorrow when i review the second flavor of the bk lineup: flame broiled. (not sure what that means, but i’ll eat it)
Yes these BK Chips have popped up in our workplace vending machine recently. It was hysterical as we all stood stunned and curious at the same time. However none of us could or would cough up 1.50 to try them. LOL The taste will continue to be a mystery to us. Have not seen the flame broiled. Can’t wait for the review.
