taste test: la lechera flakes cereal

lalecherathat’s right folks, once again trixareforkids brings you something from a local supermarcado. today we are talking about the general mills manufactured, but trademark owned by nestle, la lechera flakes cereal.

to say it was an impulse buy is an understatement, but rather more of a curiosity. for those that don’t know, nestle la lechera is a sweetened condensed milk product. the original flavor is still the most popular but they have spawned other flavors and styles as dulche de leche, fat free and even a coffee creamer product. the original product is aimed at the spanish market, however the cereal and condensed milk have labels with dual translations in spanish and english.

the cereal box is no different and can either teach you spanish or provide a ‘rosetta stone’ interface to learn spanish. to be fair we tried the cereal dry (as a snack) and with 2% milk. no bananas or fruits were harmed in the making of this review to show the true taste of the cereal. let’s begin.

dry: sweet. obnoxiously sweet and tasted oddly like milk. the flakes themselves are eerily uniform and a thicker version of frosted flakes. *both are corn based cereals, that’s why a frosted flakes comparison is warranted. it crunches heavily in your mouth, almost as thick as a potato chip. the first thing you taste is super-sweet milk and as you chew the corn-meal flavor comes out.

with milk: if you like all things dairy, this is the cereal for you. let me paint you a picture: my first spoonful is like i made a dairy concoction of half & half and sweetened condensed milk and poured it over my cereal. that’s what it tasted like. the thickness of the cereal (due to the amount of corn base and thickness of the sugar coating) played a major factor into enjoyment or not. chewing was like eating a small stack of plastic discs; so much so that it almost hurt my teeth. after about 2-3 minutes the coating dissolved and left behind the corn base. this was good and bad. good: i could actually taste the corn, bad: the milk was inedible due to the sweetness.

overall: the cereal might be good for little kids, but adults be warned. well feel free to indulge if you have a good dental plan or would like to develop adult-onset diabetes. final marks 2/10. it was semi-edible at first and then went downhill. i will actually be throwing the box out and drinking my coffee black this morning to attempt to offset the sugar i’ve already ingested.
