food trucks, not just roach coaches

i went out on a limb and tried something different today.  i decided to eat off a food truck.  now here’s the thing, in chicago food trucks are usually reserved for crap food for construction workers and those laborers that enjoy roach infested foodservice establishments.  here in philly it’s a whole different story.  the are plentiful and serve everything from hots and burgers to fresh fruit salads and even chinese food.  yes that’s right, chinese food.

enter tang’s located at the corner of 37th and spruce in philly. this stainless steel wonder is parked right on the side of the road and serves it all.  actually over 50 different dishes by my calculations.  i arrived at about 2pm yesterday and decided to play it safe and went with the chicken lo mein and boy was i glad that i did.

after i ordered the lovely lady proceeded to grab some broccoli which i politely asked be omitted, she obliged, and moved on to grabbing onions, green peppers and pea pods.  the first two were placed in chicken broth to cook while the pea pods were sent straight to the hot oil and then into the broth.  my container was filled with noodles, the veggies, poached chicken, and topped with a very nice gravy.

i have to say i was amazingly impressed.  for starters i was thinking that i was just going to end up with bland food and a stomach ache, but i was so pleased. the veggies were cooked nicely, though a bit under, but seriously when in asian cooking do you get a fully cooked vegetable? the chicken had tremendous flavor.  it was poached in chicken broth and was not overcooked.  the noodles were steamed and not gummy at all.  the gravy was thin, slightly brown and had a nice balance of peanut, sesame and vinegar.  all in all it was probably the best value i have had in a long time.  the whole meal came to a whopping $3.25.  a local even told me they were voted one of the best food trucks in the city.

check ‘em out yourself at tang, 37th and spruce philadelphia, pa.  they didn’t have hours posted but i would imagine it’s like 11-6 or something.  i will have pics to show you once i get home and have them loaded.
